Willemien Van Damme holds a B.S and M.S. degree in Sociology (University of Ghent, 2012, 2021) and a M.S. degree in Educational Sciences (University of Ghent, 2016). Currently, she works on migration in the urban periphery of Brussels and the related tensions between the established and the outsiders. In this research, we focus on the rationales behind subtle, but rapidly accumulating tensions between the two social groups. Based on in-depth interviews with established people, people who have lived there for generations, and outsiders, people with a migration background, we explore the meaning of home and sense of belonging in Denderleeuw, Dilbeek and Ninove.

Research:

  • Migration (politics) in urban periphery
